Sorting — Three Piles
Face the piles from the open hardstand. Sort every load into the correct pile. Each pile is processed differently.
| Pile (facing piles) | Put here | End use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Left | Dirt, soft plants (mother-in-law’s tongue, birds of paradise, banana palms, and similar), and grass clippings | Composted down to plant compost and topsoil |
| 2 — Middle | Hard wood and logs over 60 mm, large roots, and other material that will not go through the wood chipper | Burnt, then turned into topsoil |
| 3 — Right | Palm fronds; branches under 60 mm; green palm stems under 60 mm; other chipper-suitable prunings | Turned into wood chips |
60 mm Rule
Under 60 mm (and soft enough / green palm stems) → right pile (wood chips). Over 60 mm, hard logs, and heavy roots → middle pile (burn → topsoil). Soft leafy / fleshy plants, grass clippings, and dirt → left pile (compost → plant compost and topsoil).
Pile 1 — Left (Compost / Topsoil)
- Dirt and soft plant material
- Grass clippings
- Mother-in-law’s tongues, birds of paradise, banana palms, and similar
- Outcome: composted down to plant compost and topsoil
- Do not put hard logs or thick branches here
Pile 2 — Middle (Burn → Topsoil)
- Hard wood and logs over 60 mm
- Roots and other material that would not pass through the wood chipper
- Outcome: burnt, then turned into topsoil
- Keep chipper-sized green waste out of this pile
Pile 3 — Right (Wood Chips)
- Palm fronds
- Branches under 60 mm
- Palm stems that are under 60 mm and still green
- Other material intended for wood chipping
- Outcome: processed into wood chips
